I
am a representational landscape painter, painting
in oils. I prefer to paint on location (en plein-air),
where all the "answers" are in front of me and the
adrenalin and excitement can carry over into the painting.
I know I only have two or three hours at most to capture
the scene if I want to finish it during that session.
I also occasionally go back to the same place, at
the same time of day, to continue working on a painting
- which allows a more thoughtful, controlled final
product. I also do paintings in the studio from
small field studies done on location, along with reference
photographs; if a painting is beautiful and evokes
an emotional response in me, I don't care where or
how it was done. I find scenes that I want to paint
on both sunny or gray days - there is always beauty
in nature or even on a busy city street! I use a very
limited palette - just the three primaries and sometimes
veridian green. Consequently, the colors in my paintings
naturally harmonize, being from the same colors. I
stress composition in my paintings and look for dynamic,
strong settings and lighting.
